OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this monorail/monobeam initiative is to help cause the planning and construction of an elevated monorail or monobeam rail system in the Maryland-Virginia region.

Elevated monorail/monobeam is used in conjunction with roads, rails and trails but in lieu of trolley and surface rail systems to transport people.

WHY

Elevated monorail/monobeam systems are people and environmentally friendly.  They provide for better land use, are safer and faster than trolley systems.  Also, they are many times less expensive and faster to build than heavy rail systems such as METRO.

These elevated systems can be built over numbered roads and existing right-of-ways which connect significant residential areas, business centers and transportation nodes with minimum disruption.  Visit the Monorail Society website www.monorails.org for a comprehensive look at monorails and see some of the many systems built in the US and around the world.

Monorail/monobeam systems should NOT be built along Interstate Highways unless they are to be used for long distance travel, since the purpose is to bring transportation close to where people live, work, and play.  Buses, bikes, and scooters can provide the final links.
